What is your professional or training background?
I studied graphic design at Grenadi School of Design, web design at LaTrobe College of the Arts, and have been working in graphic design for roughly 5 years now; both contracting and for my own company, Jac in a Box. In the design industry it’s very important to keep up-to-date with new software, techniques and trends, so I find myself continuously taking short courses, attending seminars and of course, reading.

What do you make, create or do?
My work is a real 50/50 split between print and digital design, my days are spent designing websites, logos, templates, flyers, invitations, posters, and so on. I have a very diverse group of clients, ranging from big companies like Foster’s & Pacific Magazines, right through to brand new small businesses. Lately I have been doing a lot of branding work for small businesses, which is very satisfying.

I also offer online marketing and social media management services.

What other creative areas would you like to explore as a side-project to your current work, or move into full-time?
I have a little side business Jac in a Box Vintage (, which I started roughly a year ago. I’ve really enjoyed dabbling in the wonderful world of fashion and am currently exploring the possibility of creating my own (very small and simple) line of clothing to compliment my vintage wares. It’s still in the very early stages though, we’ll see!

I’d also love to spend more time illustrating.

What skills do you have that help you run your business, or what skills would you like to develop?
Besides my technical and creative skills, I think my desire to continue doing what I do and my interest in the design industry is what keeps things going.

Like a lot of creatives, I’m certainly not as business savvy as I should be, but I’m more interested in continuing to develop my creative skills, whilst happily leaving the numbers and pie charts to my wonderful bookkeeper.

List five people, businesses or websites/blogs that keep you motivated and inspired, and why?
Site Inspire –
Before I begin designing a new website, I spend some time perusing Site Inspire. It showcases some of the finest designs on offer, and is also a lovely, clean design in it’s own right.
The best designs –
Appropriately named, The Best Designs showcases, well, the best designs. A wonderful source of inspiration.

Swiss Miss –
I tend to love most things that Tina Roth Eisenberg puts on her slick looking blog. A very good distraction from work.

Jacky Winter/Lamington Drive –
Jacky Winter & Lamington Drive represent some of my favourite illustrators, I thoroughly enjoy sifting through their latest work and also visiting the gallery in Collingwood from time to time.

Australian InFront –
Australian InFront is a good little resource for designers, I enjoy scrolling through their news feed and also utilise the directory to find freelancers when I need them.
