What is your professional or training background?
I did a Bachelor of Business, Communications but that feels like eons ago (perhaps because it was!!). Without the degree there’s a chance I wouldn’t have snared my first job, but I believe the real training you do is on the job. Nothing at uni compares with learning from others, experts and beginners alike, sharing experiences and just ol’ givin’ it a go.

What do you make, create or do?
I now head up a boutique PR consultancy. We look after PR for a mix of big and small businesses. Perhaps we’re not obviously creative compared with designers, printmakers and craft artisans, but real and true, there’s a huge amount of creativity that goes into a good media release or PR campaign! So what do we make… we make words, that linked together tell a very particular story; we make things happen, so that people learn something specific when they experience ‘it’; and maybe most importantly, we help other creative people share with the world just what it is that they make!

What other creative areas would you like to explore as a side-project to your current work, or move into full-time?
Words are a passion, so inside me I know is a novel or two. When the world slows a little I’m going to write at least one book.

What skills do you have that help you run your business, or what skills would you like to develop?

In PR you need to be super duper organised and have a hawk’s eye attention to detail. Without these you may as well pack up your bat and ball and go home. I also think it’s hugely helpful to be widely read – so you can pick up on the lingo of the different people you need to ‘talk’ to. As for what skill I need to develop… I need to be tougher. I hate confrontation so avoid it at all cost. What I wouldn’t give for that assertiveness gene that lets you stomp in where angels fear to tread!

List five people, businesses or websites/blogs that keep you motivated and inspired, and why?
+ Leanne Mugridge and Michele Schot – I am lucky enough to have two of my bestest friends working with me and they both continually surprise and inspire me. They are such smart women. Oh and they both have organisation and attention to detail in bucket loads!

+ Mumbrella Want to know what others in the marketing comms area are up to?? This is the hotbed of industry news and even a little gossip!

+ Source Bottle A website that helps journalists and bloggers access content – and thus an avenue for PR professionals to tout their wares!

+ Women’s Network Australia Another great source of contacts for speaking opportunities, media calls and likeminded business women.

+ Design Sponge Inspiration in spades!
